The acronym MPEG (acronym for Motion Picture Experts Group) denotes a group of scholars who gather under the ISO (International Standards Organization) in order to generate international coding standard for digitizing video and audio compression. The symbol became then by extension the name that defines the compression algorithm audio / visual born from the cooperation of the group. From this point onwards then talk of MPEG referring implicitly of algorisms. There are several generations of MPEG algorithms, and in fact we talk about MPEG 1, 2, 3, and, still being drafted, MPEG 4.
We are going to treat the use of MPEG in relation to its applications in audio. The symbol ALBANIAN MP3, used to define the audio files, has a special meaning: “MPEG 1 – Layer 3″. Layers talk about referring to different levels of compression, however, always linked algorithm MPEG first generation.
The purpose of ‘MPEG 1 – Layer 3 is to compress as much as possible an audio file, while maintaining unchanged as far as possible quality. In this way, the file becomes easily transportable on floppy disks or transferred via Internet.
